Overview

This presentation is the report of a research study on the factors influencing neonatal practice in a rural community in Kano (Northern), Nigeria. The practices examined within this study included uvulectomy, female genital mutilation, routine immunization, and umbilical cord care. The findings from this study have transcultural implications for nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe knowledge, attitudes, and neonatal care practices among household caregivers in a rural community in Nigeria, specifically uvulectomy, female genital mutilation, failure to routinely immunize, and the use of unsafe or inappropriate cord care.
  • Discuss relationships between demographic characteristics and knowledge, attitudes, and neonatal care practices among these caregivers.
  • Discuss the relevance/ implications of the findings from this study for nurses in Kentucky.
